The 2-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is highly recommended for customers with short of time and for those who don’t want to camp but still have a “taste” of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu; the trek starts at the zone of “Chachabamba” known as the Km 104 (2,100 masl); this trek is perfect for people with altitude difficulties and great alternative for families; here there is not limit for age.

2-Day Inca Trail is 11km approximately; from the begin at 2,100 masl and climb up gradually to “Wiñaywayna”  and important Inca Complex located at 2,600 masl which takes 3-4 hours of spectaculars views and other Inca sites along the road.  From Wiñaywayna, the trek will continue two more hours to Machu Picchu form where we’ll take a bus and descent to the town of “Aguas Calientes”; hotel accommodation.

Brief itinerary for 2-day Inca Trail

DAY 1: Ride to Chachabamba and trek to Machu Picchu

  • Early pick up from your hotel: from Cusco at 04:30 a.m, from Ollantaytambo at 05:45 a.m.
  • 1:45 hour-travel by train from Ollantaytambo train station to km. 82.
  • Trek for 6 -7 hours until Machu Picchu.
  • Take a Bus from Machu Picchu to “Aguas Calientes”.
  • Hotel Accommodation.

DAY 2: Explore Machu Picchu

  • Early breakfast.
  • Take a bus to for 25 minutes up to Machu Picchu.
  • 2 -3 hour tour within Machu Picchu.
  • Free time for further exploration of Machu Picchu, (optional climb the Huayna Picchu Mountain).
  • Return by trail to Ollantaytambo train station and transfer to your hotel in Cusco.

Detailed Itenerary


DAY 1: First walking day: Cusco – 104 Km – Wiñaywayna – Machu Picchu – “Aguas Calientes”

We starts at 04:30 a.m. When we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and transfer you to the train station of Ollantaytambo (we recommended stay the night before at the town of Ollantaytambo). From the train station of ollantaytambo we travel 1:45 hours by train to trailhead at Kilometer 104 or Chachabamba. Then we continue to trek over the bridge when suddenly we will find the checkpoint and show the passports and the permission for the Inca Trail.

We carry on 3 hours climb the hillside leaving the woods for open grassland till lunch time. The trail crosses through a nice waterfall and then arrive to the impressive Wiñayhuyna Inca ruins; we’ll continue walking slowly following the ancient Inca Trail and getting the best view of the Urubamba Canyon and passing the cloud forest up to the final pass named Inti Punku or Sun Gate (2,750 masl).

From the Inti Punku, we will have impressive scenery of Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu; The we continue to descend to Machu Picchu. The first day, we won’t visit Machu Picchu so that we must take the bus down to the town of “Aguas calientes” and have accommodation in the hotel.

DAY 2: Machu Picchu Tour: “Aguas Calientes” – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Wake up at 04.50 a.m and take the first bus at approximately 05:30 a.m. Arrive at Machu Picchu’s gate before 06:00 a.m when the Park is opened. This time is still not so crowded, so we take advantage of the tranquility of this sacred site.

Guided Tour of Machu Picchu will be for 2-3 hours at his enigmatic and mysterious site; during this time, we will visit the agricultural sector and mainly the urban sector; where we will visit the Temple of the Water, Temple of the Mother Earth, Temple of the Sun, the Main Temple or Wiracocha’s Temple, the Temple of the Three Windows or the Andean Cosmology Temple, The Inti Watana or Sundial, the Temple of the Mountain and the Temple of the Condor and other interesting places.

After the tour, you will have extra free time to explore by yourself or climbing to Huayna Picchu (see additional information if you want to purchase a permit for Huayna Picchu). Around 01-02:00 p.m take the bus down to “Aguas Calientes” for your return train. (Bus tickets will cost you $12 not included, most people like to walk this old Inca Trail down to “Aguas Calientes”).

The train departs from “Aguas Calientes” later in the afternoon at 05:00 p.m to Ollantaytambo, and then 1 hour and 45 minutes, transfer to Cusco and to your hotel arriving at 09:00 p.m approximately.
